The Old Idaho Penitentiary in Boise is the kind of place where the documented history is unsettling enough before the ghost stories begin.

More than a century behind the walls

Construction began in 1870, and the prison housed inmates from 1872 until December 1973. Over that span, the site became part of Idaho’s transition from territorial frontier to modern statehood. The surviving cell houses, solitary-confinement spaces and execution-related areas now form part of the public historic site.

What the site says about hauntings

The Old Idaho Penitentiary’s own website addresses the question directly. It notes that paranormal teams and television programs have investigated the property and that visitors have reported voices, touches, unusual photographs and heavy or strange sensations in certain areas.

Just as important, the Idaho State Historical Society says there is no conclusive evidence proving that ghosts are present. The reports are part of the site’s modern lore, while the institution leaves the final interpretation to the visitor.
