Reacting to POV of a Newborn Baby Harry Mack Freestyle

“POV of a Newborn Baby” sounds as though it could be interesting and funny before I even press play. Harry Mack takes an audience-selected perspective and turns it into an imagined first-person story.

The humor comes from giving the character a running commentary about a world it does not understand. While watching, I wonder how strange it would be if we could remember our own arrival in the world.

Why I enjoy these perspective changes

I have seen Harry try several point-of-view freestyles, and I like hearing where he takes them. This one is short, and my response at the end is that it was fun.

What stays with me is the storytelling exercise: take a perspective you would not normally hear and imagine how the situation might sound from there.

That idea reminds me of an English assignment from sixth grade.

The construction-paper story I remember

In class, our teacher introduced personification and asked us to write from an unusual perspective. I remember writing about a person cut out of construction paper who broke free and went on an adventure.

My story took that paper figure into the street, then into the trash and recycling, before becoming construction paper again. Looking back during the reaction, I am amused by where my imagination went as a child.

The connection is what makes this video personal for me. Harry’s improvised story brings back an old writing memory, and I finish by asking whether viewers remember doing similar exercises in school.
