Reacting to Quentin Tarantino Harry Mack Freestyle

The Happy Hour guest, Finn, arrives with a tiny hat, a collection of colorful socks, and a few ideas for Harry Mack. His suggestions include Quentin Tarantino, flipping pancakes, and the socks themselves.

I like the beat immediately. Once the movie references begin, I find myself anticipating where Harry might go next.

Hearing the reference before it lands

Pulp Fiction is one of the connections I expect, and I react when it arrives. In my closing comments, I also mention anticipating Reservoir Dogs.

That is part of the fun for me: knowing the filmmaker gives me a few possibilities to listen for, even while Harry is deciding how to put the performance together.

A lightsaber appearance adds another surprise before the sock section. Harry responds to that too, so the performance keeps picking up material beyond the original list.

Patterns that keep the freestyle changing

Finn holds up different socks, giving Harry designs to describe and build on. I have trouble making out some of them because the image does not look clear to me.

I say afterward that Harry seems able to see more than I can. That limits how much I can identify myself, but I still enjoy watching the exchange.

This is one reason I like the Happy Hour clips: the guest can bring a personality, a story, and unexpected objects into the performance.
