Shakespears Sister’s “I Don’t Care”: A Lighter Side

Shakespears Sister’s “I Don’t Care” gave me a lighter, more playful side of the group than I’d seen in my earlier reactions. The chorus sounded familiar, and the video’s dancing, costumes, and energy made it feel like the performers were having a good time.

My reaction wasn’t an instant declaration that I’d found a new favorite. I liked it, though, and it worked better for me than the second Shakespears Sister song I had watched.

A familiar chorus and a different mood

Going into this reaction, I’d already had a mixed experience with the group. I recognized the first song I tried from years earlier, didn’t care as much for the second, and was pleasantly surprised by the third. That left me curious about which direction “I Don’t Care” would take.

Once the chorus arrived, I thought there was a good chance I had heard it a long time ago. I couldn’t place the memory, and it hadn’t stayed with me as a personal favorite. But the familiarity was there.

The bigger difference was the mood. Much of what I’d watched previously felt more serious. Here, the dancing and performance struck me as happier and more relaxed. I also noticed what seemed like several little stories within the song, which kept me interested beyond recognizing the hook.

The Rocky Horror connection

The shorter-haired singer reminded me of Columbia from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The sequins and flashy outfits added to that association. It was a personal visual comparison, rather than a claim that the video was deliberately referencing the character.

Those details helped shape why I enjoyed this one: a chorus I half-remembered, a theatrical look, and a sense of fun. I didn’t love every part equally, but I came away glad I’d given another Shakespears Sister song a try.
