The Elms Hotel: Three Buildings, Two Fires and Haunted Lore

The Elms Hotel & Spa has a history dramatic enough to sound like a ghost story before any paranormal claim is added. The key is getting the timeline right.

The current hotel is the third Elms

The first Elms opened in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, in 1888 and burned in 1898. The hotel says no one was killed or injured in that fire. A second Elms opened in 1909 and burned in 1910. The third and current building opened on September 7, 1912.

That corrects a common paranormal retelling that treats all three buildings as one continuous structure or links spirits to deaths in the fires. The hotel explicitly says there were no fatalities in either blaze.

The paranormal program is real

The Elms currently offers paranormal tours and packages and openly discusses ghost legends associated with the hotel. Its own haunted-history material mentions stories involving the lap-pool area and a housekeeping figure described in 1920s-style clothing.

Those stories are presented as legends and reported experiences, not as documented deaths tied to specific rooms.

The real history is better than the invented version

Excelsior Springs grew around mineral-water tourism, and each generation of The Elms reflects that resort history. The current 1912 building survived long periods of changing travel trends, financial trouble and multiple renovations before becoming the modern hotel and spa guests visit today.

That gives the paranormal lore a real setting without requiring a fictional bride or child ghost. Visitors can take the tour, hear the stories and decide what they believe while keeping the documented timeline separate from the haunting narrative.
