The Whaley House has two stories running side by side: the documented history of a prominent San Diego family home and the paranormal reputation that has grown around the property for generations.

Thomas Whaley began construction of the Greek Revival house in 1856. Over time, the building served as more than a family residence, taking on civic and commercial roles that made it an important part of Old Town San Diego history. The property also had a darker association before the house was built: the Whaley House museum identifies the site with the execution of Yankee Jim Robinson, a detail that became central to later haunted-house lore.

The Whaley House does not hide from its reputation. Its own evening-tour material describes reported unexplained encounters tied to the family, the property and its earlier history.
